While I was back in my home at Gandevi for my vacation after 10th standard, Nina Masi gave a phone call to my father.. She informed him that she was trying for one distance education course with one of the US University. It is course on degree in sociology and can be completed in 3 years. Out of which 2 and half years study is in India and last six months in USA. So Pratik can save two years. During the last six months when Pratik is in USA he will get scholarship. What is your opinion?

Father: We don’t want to try this option because he may not be able to study on his own. So let him do his regular college of total five years. We don’t want to save two years. I am also likely to get a promotion of as Senior Officer- Excise and will get transferred in some big city. Kamal has to study only one year to have her Degree in Bio-medical science.

Masi: Ok so I will try for his admission in Surat College only.

When the results got declared, I found that I had secured 70% marks. So there was no difficulty in getting admission in V.S. Jain College. After taking admission we returned home.

Masi called my father on phone and informed him that my admission was done in Jain College and college would start in about a two weeks. Continue reading “Pallavi: First Year in College”

My school timings had now changed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. My schedule had changed accordingly.

Masi went to Dr.Kusum as routine visit. She was told that Pallavi’s voice is not as soft as it should be. I feel she should be given a small dose of female hormone taking care that immediately the breast development should not start and for first three months, every month the tests should be done to know hormone levels, Are you sure you want Pallavi to finally go for sex change operation?

Masi: At present it is definite unless medically it indicates differently. Continue reading “Pallavi: Exposure in Society”

Today is Thursday. At 7 p.m. Dipti Shah came. Just before that Piyu and Bharati came.

Masi: Meet Dipti Shah. She is your Bharat Natyam teacher. She told Dipti that as per our talk I have arranged two more students. She is Piyu and the other is Bharati.

Nina masi called me and she said: This is my Pallavi. She must learn to express like girl perfectly. You know she is a boy.

Because Thursday is considered a good day she has come today but from next week she will come every Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the session will be for one hour and on every Sunday at 10 mornings and the session will be for one and half hour or may be more if she wants. She insisted that we will have to regularly practice otherwise she will leave tuition.

She talked to us about the basic requirements of this form of dance in general and showed us few gestures. She asked us to practice. She gave us her note book and asks us to copy in our note book before Sunday chapter on ‘Introduction’ and she left.

At night I copied Dance notes in my exercise book, which will be given to others next day morning so that they can also copy.

Mother returned home next day saying she is confident that Masi will give love and take your care like me, may be more than me. Now she has nothing to worry about me. Continue reading “Pallavi: Training Begins”

I got up quickly and finished my daily routine. Masi made me wear a red colored frock, bangles, earrings, payals, kajal in the eyes and took me to a sinhasan [ a small temple like structure made of wooden in the home for worship] and asked me to pray to Goddess Bahucharaji (often worshipped by trans-women in Gujarat) to show mercy on me and make me a complete girl as early as possible. I will do all vratas and pujas as is generally being observed by girls. Nina masi offered me prasad, did aarati and then got up.

I bowed down to touch the feet of my mother and Nina masi and took their blessings. Both of them hugged me warmly.

Masi called Tej, her domestic help, and asked her to keep Pallavi aka me with her and asked me to help Tej a little in kitchen.

Mother went to her room.

Masi returned to drawing room and got busy with phones talking to various persons.

After a few days, the school reopened and my routine changed to as masi had previously told me. I had no complaints; in fact I was feeling very natural and happy though I was restricted not to go out of flat as a girl. Continue reading “Pallavi: New life begins”

Pallavi who was talking to a journalist named Nandini, was sitting on her couch fondly remembering her childhood. Pallavi continued her narration of the story about how she, as a male child named Pratik, went to live with her Nina masi for studies, and how it proved to be the first milestone/ turning point of her life. Pallavi continued to speak as Nandini listened carefully …

When we arrived at Nina masi’s home, she was their to happily greet us.  My mom and Kamal were put up in masi’s room, and I along with my father were in a room where we lived previously in summer vacation.

After taking dinner, masi told us that we will go to school at 10 in the morning.

We directly went to Principal Taraben Desai, and finished all formalities and returned home in time to take lunch. Uniform, books and exercise note books etc. were all provided by school. We visited a few relatives, and my father and my sister Kamal returned to Gandevi. Mother told father that if Pratik gets properly settled, she will return to Gandevi in 15 days time. After a few days at home, one night when we all were sitting together at home, my father opened the topic of sending me to Surat for my studies.

Father: Pratik, Do you want to go to Surat to study further?

I: Do I have to go there alone, bapuji?

Father: Yes, will you be able to live alone? We will come there initially but then it may not be so frequent.

I: Bapuji, I would like that for the few first days, mother will live with me.

Kamal (my sister): Bapuji,  actually I am much better in studies than Pratik and from last five years I am coming first in my division. Why not send me there? Now I am in 9th standard and if I go there and if I get good marks, I can go to good college. Continue reading “Pallavi: Back home at Gandevi”

Pallavi continued with the narration of her story how she met her Nina masi as a male kid.

When I arrived at Nina masi (mother’s sister) along with my mother Gayatri, Nina masi was there to welcome us. She called her house maid Tej to take our luggage and put in a room that was set up for us. It was a 2BHK house, and my mother and I got a room to live together. Nina masi was separated from her husband due to some marital problems between them. She had started to work with some magazine as a free lance writer. Her only son had went to USA right after SSC, an year ago. She seemed to be a warm woman and I instantly began to like her.

Few days at masi’s place went without any worthwhile happening. We used to go to meet some of our relatives, and occasionally we would visit some garden or a market. Nina masi was in the habit of reading and gardening. Mother told me that Nina masi knows many people, and many relatives and friends come to her for advice or help. Mother used to allow me to dress up at night when we were alone. Continue reading “Pallavi: Summer vacation with Nina Masi”
