The next morning, Sudha and Manju got up for a new start in their life. Sudha was going to work as full-time accountant, and Manju was going to work as a female secretary for Umesh in the same office as Sudha’s. Sudha was happy with the little financial stability that had come in their life.

Soon after taking a bath, Manju came out wearing a saree petticoat. His hair was wet after the bath. He had grown his hair in the past three months and were reaching up to his shoulder. He did not need a wig anymore to appear feminine. He slipped on a bra and asked Sudha, “Sudha, can you please help me hook my bra?”. He moved his hair on one side towards the front to make it easier for Sudha. Sudha was almost ready in her salwar suit today. She came up to help Manju happily. “You know, Manju. By now, you should have learnt to put on a bra.”, she laughed at Manju.

Manju was a little annoyed with what Sudha said. He was in this position because of Sudha. He didn’t want to work for her pervert boss Umesh. “So, are you wearing saree on your first day?”, Sudha asked.

“Yes. That’s what I will be required to wear when I start shooting for the TV serial remember. Also, I feel that I might feel safer in a saree from your boss. He might not develop a liking towards an old fashioned woman.”, Manju said. There was a little anger in his voice. He quickly wrapped himself in a saree. He had become really proficient in it. He began to do make up, which honestly, he had started to find onerous now. A make up that should last throughout the day required a lot of skills and patience. He would be required to touch up every now and then, to hide his true identity. He was soon ready. He was wearing a simple yellow saree as he had a long day of work ahead.

When Sudha and Manju arrived at the office, Umesh was there to welcome Manju on his first day. “Welcome, Manju. I knew you will accept this job. Are you ready to begin now?”, Umesh had a cunning smile on his face. His smile sent a shiver through Manju’s spine. Manju tightened his grip over Sudha’s hand he was holding. “Come on girls. It’s time to work. Manju, please come to my office. I will explain your work to you.”, Umesh said. Sudha had to let Manju go. Once again, she was not realizing the mistake she was about to commit. The next day, Manju was at the film set. As instructed by the director, he was dressed up as a bengali woman. Sudha had helped him wax his full body in the morning so that Manju can leave a good impression on the director. He was still nervous about the whole thing because of all that happened the previous day. He was not too worried about his role though, as he was supposed to say just one line. He was part of a big group of women who were being shown performing some ritual before a wedding in the film. His shot was recorded in one take. After his shot, he went to the makeup van where Ajay was doing makeup for other actors.

Manju sat silently in a corner. His eyes looked really deep as he quietly watched Ajay do his work. He really looked like a pretty lady. His saree was draped perfectly, better than many other female extra actors who were there on the sets. Ajay had done a fantastic make up on him. His lips looked bright red and could attract anyone. He had the perfect eye brows which many women would love to have. The big bright red bindi on his forehead, and his deep eyes, gave him a very graceful look. Continue reading “Lucky Boss: Part 3”

“Ajay”, said Manju to the man who was now going by the name Jolly. He had a bewildered look on his face.

“Hey, Manju! When did you come to Mumbai, my friend? You didn’t even tell me you are coming.”, said the other man. “Oh, is that Boudi? (Bengali for sister-in-law)”, Ajay aka Jolly walked upto Sudha to touch her feet. Sudha looked a little hesitant.

“Come on in, Manju. Come, boudi“, said Ajay to both of them. “I have a tiny home here unlike village. Mumbai is expensive, you know? I have one room that I use as a beauty parlour, another where I live, and here is the kitchen.”, said Ajay pointing the couple to the chairs to sit.

“But Ajay, did I hear correctly? I cannot believe this.”, said Manju. He was hinting towards what he just came to know about his friend, that he was a homosexual man.

“Oh, Manju. You know me, don’t you? That’s just a little lie I tell to get the job as a make-up man. You don’t know the tantrums these actresses do. They always ask for a gay make-up man. So, I pretend to be one. But I am not. You have no idea what kind of dirty tricks people have to play to survive in the film industry.”, Ajay said as if everything was normal.

“Ajay, you know that it is wrong in so many ways. Have you thought about what would happen if your wife learns about this?”, said Manju. Sudha had been quiet so far.

“Don’t worry about my wife. I have told everything to her. We both are fine with this little lie, as it helps us keep the roof over my family’s head and it pays for my children’s bright future.”, said Ajay. He was not in a mood to discuss the morality of what he was doing. “So, tell me what bring you two to Mumbai?”, asked Ajay.

Manju told everything to Ajay and how he wanted to try his luck as an actor. Continue reading “Lucky Boss: Part 2”

The festivity was in the air in that small village in West Bengal. A small area was decorated with lights and stage for the performance of Ramleela, a story telling of Ramayana. It was like a small fair with several small shops selling sweets, clothes, toys and games of various kinds. The area was really bustling with all the villagers, men in their traditional attire, women in their traditional bengali-style sarees, and children playing with their newly purchased toys and balloons. Today, the villagers were gathered for a very special performance of Ramayana. And their wait just got over. The holy goddess Sita from the story of Ramayana was going to make her first appearance today on the stage. The scene of Sita’s first appearance had just begun. As soon as the mother Sita entered the stage, the whole village stood up in devotion. “Jai Sita Maiyaa (Hail mother Sita)” shouted someone from the group, and everyone followed the chant. The scene was played very beautifully in the right holy spirit by the actors of this play. The whole village got immersed in holy devotion after watching the first night of the play that was going to run for ten days.

Manju was looking splendid as Sita in the play

After the play got over, a family consisting of an older couple, Shyam babu and Nalini, and their daughter-in-law Sudha walked towards the backstage. Manju, who played the role of Sita, was waiting anxiously for this family to come. Manju was really excited to play the much desirable and coveted role of Sita, and wanted to know how the audience liked it. Continue reading “Lucky Boss: Part 1”

My taxi was speeding towards Chetna’s home. I sat there on the back seat going through so many emotions, and so many memories. I was eager to see Chetna. Just the thought of seeing her after 10 long years, made me feel happy and excited. But I was getting emotional too, and a little scared. I could not understand the fear that was disturbing my mind. May be it was because I was not sure how my meeting with Chetna would go. Would she welcome me? Does she hate me? I didn’t know. And suddenly, it started to rain unexpectedly, as if the weather was getting emotional with me. Soon, I was outside Chetna’s home. I didn’t even realize how quickly my time passed in that taxi. That’s what happens when your heart goes through several emotions.

It took a lot of courage on my part to knock on the door of someone who I knew, hurt a lot. Few moments later, I could hear some sounds coming inside from the home. Probably, it was Chetna who was coming out to open the door. Not surprisingly, my heart began to beat faster. I wanted to turn back because I didn’t know how would I control my feelings after seeing Chetna. There was no time to think about it anyway. I just stood there waiting impatiently. I could hear Chetna’s steps approaching towards the door. I could hear the tinkling sound of her bangles. And with another tinkle, the door opened. Chetna was standing right in front of me. It was the same Chetna who I loved with all my heart. The same Chetna I left 10 years ago. And here she was, opening the door for me 10 years later.

We looked at each other. We both had so much to say to each other in our hearts, but our lips could not utter even a word.  We just stood there, looking into each other’s eyes. Chetna was wearing the same red saree that she had worn on our wedding night in Goa. She had a big red bindi on her forehead, just like a married woman, just like my wife Chetna. She was my Chetna! Oh, how beautiful she looked. I kept looking at her big eyes. The time had frozen. Yet, I could see her emotions flooding her eyes with tears. I don’t know how long we stayed there frozen, without saying anything. My heart told me, “Come on, Nishant! Hug her. She is your Chetna. She is your wife! Why don’t you hug her?” But I stood there staring into the deep eyes of Chetna. And she kept looking back intently.

Chetna opened the door. She was wearing the same red saree she wore on our wedding day. She looked as beautiful as that day with a big bindi on her forehead.

It seemed as if her eyes are going to burst into tears, but then she turned back quickly. She wiped her tears, and asked me to come in. “Come on in”. Her first words. And I was still wordless.

“How was your flight? I came to know from Gaurav that you are coming here for a few days. I was not really expecting that you would come to my home. You must be tired, right? I never like to travel on a long flight.”, Chetna spoke a lot of words very quickly. She was trying to hide her emotions behind those words. But she could not.

I walked behind her to get inside the house. My Chetna was still as beautiful as she was 10 years ago. She must be 33 years old now. With age, he had acquired the gracefulness of a mature woman. I kept looking at her feminine and graceful walk. Her hips waived like a true woman at each step. For the outside world, she might be a crossdresser. But for me, she was a real woman in my eyes. After all, she was my wife. I was realizing after so many years that I had a wife who was living alone without me. Looking at her dressing, I was sure that she had dressed specially for me. Today, she was wearing anklets on her feet which made the beautiful “Chham Chham” sound at each step. And at each step, her “Chham Chham” was forcing me to feel what I had lost.

“My flight was not too bad.”, I gave a short answer to Chetna. If you think about it, our heart can play funny tricks with us. It keeps telling you to say so many things to the person in front of you, but when the time comes, it just goes quiet. And everything remains in the heart itself. Continue reading “Roommate: Part 5”

Continue reading “रूममेट: भाग ५”
