My sister finally caught a whiff of what I was trying to achieve. But, wanting to confirm more, she once again challenged me in a badminton duel and won. Losing interest, I rushed back inside without waiting for her. “You did not hear my wish”, her words fell on my deaf ears. After dinner, she took me outside for a walk. “You did not hear my wish”, she repeated again. “Sorry…what is it?” I asked without even looking at her. “I want to dr…”, she began again. “Yeah, I know. You want to drive scooty”, I completed her sentence. “No, I want to dress you in saree”, her words threw me off. Even though, I was happy to hear her words. But suspecting foul play, I rejected her idea as rubbish. Continue reading “Varsha: Sister’s surprise”

The play finally got over by 8pm. When curtains closed after the final act, Audience raised the roof with their whistles and claps. With my teacher’s approval, I dispersed from the backstage crowd to the change room, where my mother was waiting with a bag. Continue reading “Varsha: The Masterplan”

With none of my antics working, I finally surrendered. “Just promise me one thing”, I requested my mom. “Which is?”, she was eager than ever to hear me. “Under no circumstance, Gayathri must know this…not even dad”, I raised my hand for her promise. She promised that no one will know about this and kissed me in my cheek with love.

The next morning, I left her in teacher’s cabin and went to watch the rehearsal. Sometime later, she came out with some notes and signaled me to come. “Thank you madam, Varshan will come tomorrow”, she thanked my teacher and we started heading home. Continue reading “Varsha: Stage is set”

“Varshan…….WAKE UP”, my mom came running towards me with my tooth brush. “Wake up…wake up, it 7am. It’s getting late”, she repeated again and again like a rap singer. At last, I woke up and looked at my wall clock, it was showing 6:30 am. “Mom…. Seriously”, I stared at her with anger. She looked at the clock like an innocent kid. “Oh sorry, I thought it was 7am”, she gave an Oscar worthy performance stating how the clock was 7 when she saw and had magically turned 6:30. She placed the brush in my hand and left to prepare lunch. “You deserve an Oscar”, I shook my head with disapproval and started my way to the wash-sink. Continue reading “Varsha: The Drama Begins”

“Beep Beep…..Beep Beep” the alarm from my mobile was ringing as usual. Lying under piles of bed sheet, the alarm startled me for a second and I looked around frantically as if I had woken up from worst nightmare. Coming back to conscious, I laid back again breathing a sigh of relief.

Beside me, was my love Arun, who had a bizarre face expression, quickly covered the head under a pillow and started to mumble about the alarm.

With much effort I slowly moved my hand out of the pile and started tapping the table in search of my phone. The tapings made my bangles clink which suddenly had a pounding on my heart upon hearing the sound. After multiple tapings, I grabbed my phone and looked at it, rubbing my eyes to check the time. My phone still beeping with alarm time showed “7:30 AM Sunday”, filling up my entire screen. It’s my usual alarm clock which I used for waking up during work days. When I close my eyes, all the past events begin to show up in front of my eyes like a lucid dream. I remember those beautiful moments as a girl when I would chat with my sister Shikha didi for long, and how I would tease my brother-in-law as his young naughty sister-in-law. I also remember those moments which were not as beautiful. I remember how I felt humiliated when I went out as a girl for the first time in this world. I still remember how boys from my school teased me when they found the truth about me. I also remember when another boy touched my body parts inside my saree for the first time… and I certainly remember all the humiliating taunts by Gita.
